Can This Antioxidant Prevent You From Having A Stroke?
Posted By Dr. Mercola | November 17 2011
Research has shown that vitamin E and some carotenoids have antioxidant activities that can help protect you against cardiovascular disease. A new study examined the antioxidant and red-pigment carotenoid astaxanthin.
The study attempted to determine whether astaxanthin could protect stroke-prone, hypertensive rats from vascular oxidative damage, hypertension, and cerebral thrombosis. Astaxanthin kept their systolic blood pressure lower, and showed other signs of decreasing the rats' stroke risk.
According to the study, as reprinted on the website Green Med Info:
"These results supported our hypothesis and strongly suggested that the antithrombotic and antihypertensive effects of astaxanthin or vitamin E may be related to an increase in bioavailable NO [nitric oxide], possibly mediated by decreased inactivation of NO by reactive oxygen species."
