Researchers investigated whether blood levels of Bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalate metabolites are related to atherosclerosis.
The study found a significant relationship to carotid plaques even after adjustment for gender, body mass index, blood glucose, blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking, statin use, and other factors.
According to the article, as reprinted on the website Green Med Info:
"The phthalate metabolite MMP was related to atherosclerotic plaques in an inverted U-shaped manner independently of CV risk factors. Some phthalates and BPA were also related to the echogenicity of the plaques, suggesting a role for plaque-associated chemicals in atherosclerosis."
