Paralysis Cases Soar after Oral Polio Vaccine Introduced

A new report slamming the oral polio vaccine is the subject of controversy in India, where cases of non-polio acute flaccid paralysis have increased 1200 percent since the oral polio vaccine was introduced 10 years ago. As reported by Digital Journal, flaccid paralysis is clinically indistinguishable from polio, but twice as deadly.
India's Deputy Commissioner for Child Health and Immunization for the Ministry of Welfare downplayed the report even though the research showed that the 47, 500 new cases of flaccid paralysis had increased proportionally to the doses of oral polio received. The oral vaccine contains a live polio virus, and has been linked to polio-like paralysis. It was banned in the U.S. over 10 years ago. The Indian study is published in the Indian Journal of Medical Ethics.
